I mean, it’s kind of weird, because he is a pretty prominent superhero in the comics. I had never heard of it until I found out that I was working on this movie. Times are changing as we all move forward together as a society.

But after having seen Shang-Chi, it still impacted my enjoyment of the movie in an extremely positive way. I was just happy to get the experience of watching a superhero movie in theaters. I didn’t pay attention to the looks of the superheroes because I was a kid. When I watched the Marvel movies as a kid, it’s not something that I was aware of at all. When the real Xu Wenwu was revealed in Shang-Chi, it was clear that the villain was not amused with the theft of his legacy, keeping Slattery locked in the cells beneath his home. A villain claiming to be the Mandarin first appeared in Iron Man 3, however it was later revealed that the man was actually Trevor Slattery (Bill Kingsley), an actor who had adopted the Mandarin's moniker. The Mandarin has had a few false introductions throughout the MCU's history.
